Welcome!
I'm Nicola Derbyshire, and I am a Masters of Library and Information candidate at the University of Washington for 2013. The road that has led me to my eventual career choice has been varied and eventful, from my background as a creative writing student at Eastern Washington University, to my professional achievements working in an organizational capacity in the jewelry industry for the past five years, and finally to my decision to go for an MLIS at the UW with a desire to focus on archiving and digital access. My experiences have helped me develop great writing skills, an excellent sense of organization, and a strong desire to further digital access in the information world.
I am passionate about history, both on the small scale (the day to day life of people and organizations) and the large scale (events that shape communities and the world), and how our knowledge of history can shape what we do with the future. I believe that the first step is always making that history accessible to whoever wants it, and to that end I am so excited to be entering a field where I have the opportunity to make that happen. The time has come for filing cabinets and old musty closets around the world to open up and share what they know. With my passions for history and digital communication and access, I believe that I can be instrumental in making information that was once forgotten relevant again, wherever I end up.
I hope this brief jaunt through my educational and professional experiences leaves you informed and entertained. Please feel free to contact me with any questions!
